DescriptionCoronation robes of a peeress (kirtle, train, cape) and underdress. Kirtle: fitted crimson velvet with ermine borders; open scallop-edge front closed with silk band above waist; elbow-length sleeves with 2 rows of ermine and ermine vandyked edge; modified square neckline at back; front panels lined with white silk, grosgrain waistband and shoulder straps with "Worth" label inside; Train: crimson velvet with ermine borders; 6 pleats at top; attaches to kirtle with hooks-and-eyes and 2 gold cords with tassels at shoulders; white silk lining. Shoulder cape: ermine with 3 rows of tails (denoting rank); white silk lining. Underdress: white silk, straight top with shoulder straps; hooks-and-eye and snap side closure, 2 side darts. Shoulder bag: crimson velvet with gilt-metal monogram "MEB" surmounted by crown, gilt rope braid border and 4 corner tassels; white silk lining. Condition: linings deteriorating.

Sketch of coronation robes (1979.57a-g) worn by the Countess of Berkeley at the coronation of George VI. Matted and framed with description written on backing paper of frame. Envelope glued to back, containing a letter dated May 18, 1937, from M. Cooper, House of Worth, London, to Miss Lucy Lowell (original enclosure with sketch), along with a samples of red velvet and white fur (ermine?).
