In 1984, Judd collaborated with the Swiss firm Lehni AG to produce “metal furniture, itself practical and handsome, without affectation.” He ultimately designed 15 pieces, each titled simply with its number and form, and also produced handmade wooden furniture. No. 1 Chair utilizes an aesthetic language and material care that is similar to that of his sculptural works: it is minimal and geometric, impeccably crafted, and has a seductive, glossy red coloring that brings an opulence to an otherwise formal simplicity.
