ProvenanceProbably Eva Umlauff (b. 1903 – d. 1997), Cherryfield and Lubec, ME [see note]. June, 1992, sold by Charles Mack, Northboro, MA, to William and Bertha Teel, Marblehead, MA; 2014, bequest of William Teel to the MFA. (Accession Date: February 26, 2014)
NOTE: According to Mr. Teel's notes, this was "formerly in collection in Maine, of the daughter of Umlauff, a Hamburg dealer at the turn of the century.” Eva Goritz Umlauff was married to Johann Friedrich Gustav Umlauff (b. 1899 - d. 1942), the grandson and namesake of J. F. G. Umlauff (b. 1833 - d. 1889), who had founded the Hamburg-based Umlauff firm in 1868. Until it closed in 1974, the Umlauff firm operated as an ethnographic art and artifact business, amassing an extensive collection. It is not known exactly when or how this mask was removed from New Ireland.
