DescriptionBaltimore album quilt with serpentine floral border with red flowers; 5 x 5 square with floral appliqed designs of wreaths, basked and bouquets, white ground; probably made for Georgina Eltonhead on her marriage in 1847; edges bound in twill tape; backed with undyed cotton plain weave. Written in ink are the names: "Georgina Eltonhead 1847" "Martha J. Riley" "Maria L. Riley" and "Mary E. Riley".

Provenance1847, made for Georgianna Eltonhead (b. 1822 - d.1910), VA; between 1847 and about 1955, given by inheritance within family; about 1955*, sold to Florence Peto (b. 1881 - d. 1970); 1969 sold by Peto to Florence Maine, Ridgefield, CT; before 1999, sold by Maine to a private collector, PA; January 16, 1999, sold at auction at Sotheby’s, New York; 2000, acquired by Gerald E. Roy, Warner, NH; 2013, sold by Roy to the MFA. (Accession date: February 27, 2013)

*1955 Peto lent the quilt to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan; two years later it was lent to the Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages in Stony Brook, New York
