Ariadne, a heroine of Greek mythology, used a ball of thread to help her love Theseus safely enter and exit the labyrinth of the Minotaur, a monstrous part-man/part-bull. Here Reichek combines age-old textile practices with contemporary methods. She digitally embroidered this sample with imagery gathered from internet searches for “Greek culture,” reducing the richness of the ancient world to a series of logos. Mining the meaning of the handmade through the use of technology, she creates a hybrid object – much like the Minotaur himself.
