This crucifix is made from a variety of types of amber, from the red, translucent cross to the opaque, ivory-like figures of Christ and two women, to the solid base below.
DescriptionCross of red translucent amber; figure of Christ and two female figures on either side of the base are of opaque amber, resembling ivory. Crucifix rests on casket-like base of amber.
ProvenanceAlessandro Castellani (1823-1883), Rome; late 19th century, acquired in Rome by William Arnold Buffum; 1902, bequest of William Arnold Buffum to the MFA.
