DescriptionBust of a young man depicting Virgil. Clothed in a draped toga, he wears a laurel crown.
ProvenanceMarch 21- 23, 1893, Carrier-Belleuse Sale, Hotel Drouot, Paris, lot 167 [see note 1]. By 1992, Sandorval & Co., Inc., New York; 1994, sold by Sandorval & Co. to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 26, 1994)
Notes:
[1] Bust retains a label numbered 167, presumably from this sale. According to Sandorval & Co., the bust was sold at the March 1893 sale and was kept “under a bell jar for nearly one hundred years since the sale," implying that it remained in a single private collection. See MFA curatorial file.
