Since 1977 Dogançay has traveled the world to photograph walls as canvases of public expression. His pictures capture the accumulations and deteriorations of posters, graffiti, and paint that form collective collages of time. This 1981 photograph taken in Montreal depicts a powerful leader whose weathered portrait might likewise reflect his faded political power or grasp on ideals. While this poster’s life span was limited, Dogancay’s photograph bears witness to a historical turning point, and to the variety of passionate opinions that unfold in the streets.
