In the 1640s, Asselijn traveled to Italy, where he joined the Bentveughels (Birds of a Feather), a society of Dutch and Flemish artists based in Rome. While there, he painted scenes of the Roman countryside. He visited this site outside of Lyon, France, on his way home. Asselijn here evokes the warmth and dreamlike feel of the Mediterranean through his innovative use of color, evident in the turquoise water, the pinkish hues of the hazy atmosphere, and the golden light. Other elements, such as the peasants involved in mundane tasks and the ferryboat on the river, are reminiscent of the Dutch landscape tradition.
