DescriptionThe dish consists of three sections: a base supported on scrolled legs, a removable dish, and a domed cover. The base, formed from several panels of sheet, has a shaped oval stand, richly decorated with panels of chased strapwork and a border of palmettes with bosses in the form of masks. Bolted to the front and back edges of the stand are winged putti, cast in several sections, each holding a dove and a bow and wearing a quiver. Two bifurcated scrolled legs, cast in several sections, rise to support the plateau. They are studded with quatrefoils, mask, diamonds, and beading. A cast snake encricles each leg, and small squirrels and lizards perch on the termini. Two projecting handles formed of a winged female figure and a scroll anchor the edge of the plateau. The base of the plateau, formed from section of sheet and chased, has a heavy baluster pendant that hangs below the dish between the legs. It is cast in two pieces. A plain oval heater rests on a wire rim within the plateau. It is formed of sheet and filled with sand. At the center of the underside is a shallow dome, possible to accommodate an additional heating element stored in the pendant. The shaped oval dish has a broad molded border chased with scrolled foliage enclosing animal heads and a cast outer border of rosettes alternating with masks. Conjoined scrolls form a handle at each end. The domed bombé cover has an applied flaring rim with an ovolo border. The cover is chased overall with arabesques against a matted ground with an oval reserve at each side enclosing a monogram. The removable cast finial is modeled as a group of dead game birds.

On side of dish, lion passant (repeated on finial, underside of stand, one wing of each angel, heater, and all original nuts); leopard's head (repeated on heater); date letter L (repeated on underside of stand and heater); maker's mark ISH (Culme 8358) (repeated on finial, underside of stand, one wing of each angel, and underside of heater).
InscriptionsARMORIALS: cast and engraved on a shield held by putti, the arms, crest, and motto of Hope, probably for John Alexander Hope, sixth Earl of Hopetoun (1831-1873).
