DescriptionThe sconces are composed of a richly chased cartouche-shaped backplate supporting a scrolled bracket with nozzle. The backplate, formed from a single sheet, is chased with a figure of a putto flanked by swags of fruit against a crisply mattered ground. Above is a chased concave shell, and at the base of the bracket is a chased grotesque mask. The backplates are cracked and repaired in many places. Some of the repairs, consisting of patches of silver applied over weak areas in the chasing, are contemporaneous with the manufacture. The arm, formed of complex scrolls and square in section, is cast in two pieces and seamed vertically. The waxpan has molded wire edges and pierced hearts on its underside and surrounding the nozzle. The nozzle, cast in two vertical pieces, is urn-shaped. Mate to 63.785
