Collinson & Lock exhibited a chair of this design at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. This international exhibition provided a showcase for British design and played an important role in bringing the fashionable designs of the Aesthetic Movement to America. The slender forms of this chair and the use of exotic wood are characteristic elements of the Aesthetic style.
DescriptionTwo slender stiles with turned horizontal bands connected by two flat rails fitted with a rectangular upholstered back. Three slender turned rails below the upholstered back. Seat rails have carved horizontal bands and are fitted with a square upholstered seat. Slender front legs have turned horizontal bands. Three stretchers with turned bands on front and sides; single stretcher in back. Balustrade between upper and middle front stretchers. Contemporary upholstry.
