女谷は白須賀の東橋本にあり 昔の宿駅にして建久元年頼朝公上洛し給ふ旅館の旧跡なり 此時橋本の長より遊女郡参す 故にその名あり その頃右大将に寵を得し女ありしが頼朝薨(こう)じ給ふ後 貞操にして尼となり妙相(みょうしょう)と号し一寺を建立して永く行ひすましける 今橋本の教恩寺これなり

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
