Inscriptions昔此駅に何某の浪人妻妊娠しける 夫は忠義の為に吾妻へ趣くにその帰を待居たりし ある夜佐夜の中山沓掛松原にて盗賊出て恋慕し絶ざるにより斬殺し行衡(ゆくへ)しれず 此女日頃念ずる観世音僧と現じ亡婦の懐なる赤子に飴をあたへ養育なさしむ 夫この事をしらず 夢見あしきゆへ 急ぎ我家へ帰る道にて夜啼石(よなきいし)のはなしを聞て なほなほ奇異の思ひをなし 夜にかかり沓掛松原石の辺りを通りしに 妻の亡霊あらはれ くはしき事を物語り懐の赤子を渡し それより魂魄付まとひて終に敵を討しけり

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
