春の部。上野寛永寺に向かう広小路を描く。右側は明和5年(1786)名古屋の呉服商伊藤屋が買収した上野の呉服商松坂屋で、前の通りを花見客の一行が通る。安政2年に起こった大地震は江戸に甚大な被害をもたらしたが、広重はこのシリーズを通して復興の様を描いている。本図には、松坂屋の復興した安政3年9月の改印があり、復興の様子を速報性をもって伝えていることがわかる。 -- 藤澤紫K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
