DescriptionThe oval body of the tureen rests on a raised stepped foot with a rim of chased acanthus leaves and above, fluting. The body of the vessel is raised from very heavy-gauge sheet, with chased fluting decorating the lower third. Above, in the midsection, is a band of foliate swags with pendants that are cast and applied. The upper rim is edged with rosettes, and beneath that, a border of acanthus leaves cast in sets of two and applied. A large tear in the rim near one of the handles has been repaired. The handles are finely modeled and cast with reeded bases and a knop, and terminate in two snakes joining the rim of the tureen. The raised cover has a chased acanthus border beneath the dome, and its fluted central panel has a finial in the form of a fruit in a cluster of acanthus leaves. The boat-shaped stand has a band of laurel along its rim and a raised central section covered with palm leaves. The central section creates a level platform with a molded rim, on which rests the foot of the tureen. The stand is formed of raised sheet. The scrolled handles with acanthus leaf ornament are cast and applied, and the lip at the center is also applied.

On underside of stand, foot of tureen, and bezel of cover, sovereign's head; date letter q; leopard's head crowned; lion passant; maker's mark IS (Grimwade 1670).
