DescriptionThe plain kettle, raised from sheet, is in the form of a compressed globe. It sits on a circular open stand supported by three scrolled legs with pad feet, assembled from cast components. Suspended between the three legs by scrolling supports is a circular molded lamp, with a removable flat top and a hinge, rounded cap. The spout of the kettle, cast in two vertically seamed pieces, is curved and has a circular drop. The plain bail handle is covered with rattan. The cover, formed from sheet, fits flush with the rim of then kettle, and its baluster finial has an ivory knop. The rim around the cover is engraved with a geometric pattern and scrolls, and on the center of one side of the kettle is an engraved cartouche enclosing a coat of arms. Although the surface of the kettle has suffered, the plain, rather rough workmanship is evident.
Marks On underside of kettle, maker's mark GS (Grimwade 890)( repeated inside of cover and four times inside lamp); leopard's head crowned; date letter I; lion passant (repeated on inside cover).
InscriptionsARMORIALS: engraved on side of kettle, an unidentified coat of arms and crest (quarterly 1 and 4, a lion rampant, two ten roudels, four, three, two and one, three, two, chrevonelles; in pretence, 1 and 4, on a chevron five between three saltiers; 2 and 3, a lion rampant and in chief three escallops; crest: a leopard's head).
