DescriptionThe pear-shaped sugar bowl has a domed cover surmounted by a finial in the form of a carnation with stem and leaves. The elongated pear-shaped body of the jug has been fitted with an ear-shaped handle, a projecting spout, and a flat domed cover. Both wares are decorated with a turquoise (bleu celeste) ground and shaped oval reserves painted with landscapes containing buildings and solitary figures. The cover of each has been left white in the center; the carnation finial on the cover of the sugar bowl is painted naturalistically in carmine and green enamel. The reserves are framed by elaborate gilt borders which include an inner tooled and burnished band enclosed by thinner bands and tooled flowers and fronds. The gilding on the two covers includes garlands of flowers which wind over and under circular bands located at the edge of the turquoise ground.
