DescriptionOne of a pair of candlesticks. The shaped circular base has a band of guilloche patterning which gives way to a molded band with four applied floral motifs between two C scrolls. The dome of the base is fluted and rises to a reed and ribbon knop. The knop gives way to a shaped octagonal baluster stem with four vertical bands of coin molding and alternating single and clustered gadroons. The stem rises to an octagonal molded knop and a shaped circular campana nozzle. The base is decorated with alternating gadroons and leaves on a matted ground. The nozzle is pain otherwise with a band of matting and beading and a molded rim. The underside of the base is engraved with "Joao de Lemos".
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, TG, a fleece (Dennis, 165); Warden's Mark: 1734-1735: a crowned S (Dennis, 133). Charge Mark: 1732-1738: acrowned A (Dennis, 165). Discharge Mark: for works intended for export 1733(? )-1775: a little cow (Dennis, 125). The Maker's, Warden's and Charge marks are all located on the inner rim and the underside of the base. The discharge mark is located on the outer rim.
