DescriptionA large oval double salt. The body is of wire woven to form a basket with a slightly shaped rim. There are two silver-gilt inserts for the salt. The center portion between them is cast and chased with grape leaves and bunches of grapes with a realistic cast bird perched on top.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, ADS, a heart (Dennis, 127). Warden's Mark: 1762-1763: a crowned Y (Dennis, 152). Charge Mark: for large work, 1762-1768: a crowned A with a laurel branch (Dennis, 128). Discharge Mark: for small work, 1762-1768: a hound's head (Dennis, 96) Other: Guarantee Mark used after 1838: a small crab (Tardy, p. 173). The Maker's, Warden's and Charge marks are on the bottom interior of the basket and the bottom of the two inserts, the Discharge mark is on the rim of both the inserts and the guarantee mark is on the bottom rim of the basket and the rims of both inserts.
