DescriptionOne of a pair of cast candlesticks. The stepped shaped circular base has a band of egg and dart molding followed by vertical fluting and a band of horizontal reeding with alternating large and small acanthus leaf motifs. The spirally fluted dome rises to a facetted triangular knop with a band of egg and dart molding and three panels with husk on a matted ground. The knop gives way to a hexagonal stem with alternating panels of foliage and acanthus leaf on a matted ground above shells and panels of scalework above shells with a rosette in the center and a shell and floral festoon above. The banded nozzle has an alternating leaf and spirally fluted base on a matted ground with an egg and dart rim.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, FR, a cock (Nocq, p. 402). Warden's Mark: 1735-1736: a crowned T (Dennis, 51). Charge mark: 1732-1728: a crowned A (Dennis, 51). Discharge Mark: for large and medium-sized work, 1732-1738: a horse (Dennis, 51). The Maker's mark is on the inner rim of the base and is probably in the nozzle, the Warden's and Charge marks are on the inner rim of the base and the inside of the nozzle, the Discharge mark is on the outer rim of the base.
