DescriptionOne of a pair (see 1993.367.1) of shaped oval trencher salts on a scrolled base with scrolled feet and plain molded sides. The rim and interior is slightly lobed and silver gilt (?), as is the bottom of the cover. Cover is chased, hinged and of scallop shell form. Engraved with AE changed to AP(?) on the underside.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, CD, a moon (Dennis, 108). Warden's Mark: 1740-1742: a crowned A (Dennis, 289).Charge Mark: 1738-1744: a crowned A with palm branches (Dennis, 289). Discharge Mark: for small work, 1738-1744: a fox's head (Dennis, 289). Other: FE with a star between in an oval; an octagonal or square mark with a head in it, possibly the guarantee mark for large work used after 1838: a helmeted head in an octagon (Tardy, p.173).
