DescriptionOne of a pair (see 1993.367.2) of shaped oval trencher salts on a scrolled base with scrolled feet and plain molded sides. The rim and the interior are slightly lobed in four parts. The interior is gilt as is the underside of the cover. Cover is chased and hinged, of scallop shell form. Engraved with AE changed to AP(?) on the underside of the salt.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, CD, a moon (Dennis, 108). Warden's Mark: 1740-1742: a crowned A (Dennis, 108). Charge Mark: 1738-1744: a crowned A with Palm branches (Dennis, 289). Discharge Mark: for small work, 1738-1744: a fox's head (Dennis, 289). Other: Countermark used after 1838: parts of insects (Rosenberg, 5929); FE with a star between in an oval. An ocatagonalor square mark with a head in it, possibly a guarantee mark for large work us ed after 1838 : A helmeted man in an oval (Tardy, p.173).
