DescriptionOne of a set of six candlesticks, a pair with 1993.345.5. The tall, shaped circular molded base has alternating palm branches, shells, and blank cartouches surrounded by leaves. Above this is a band of guilloche with four rosettes and foliage. The spirally fluted dome rises to a shaped triangular knop resting on scrolling foliage with a guilloche band above. The knop gives way to a shaped triangular stem with a base of shells on caylx and cast and chased husk and leaf patterning surmounted by masks surrounded by foliage and husk on four sides, with chased fluting on the other, smaller, four. The shoulder is molded and each corner is covered by a leaf. The stem gives way to a small reeded knop. The nozzle is banded with a base of cast and chased foliage on a matted ground and a guilloche rim. This pair is slightly different from the other four. The masks are narrower, the flutes on the stem are closed and are wider, the fluting on the base is outlined in matting, the guilloche band on the base is smaller, and there are gadroons instead of rosettes on the foliage. They have two bobeches which may or may not be contemporary. The bobeches are circular with raised guilloche rims.
Marks Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, EG, a rayed sun (Dennis, 176). Warden's Mark: 1749-1750: a crowned I (Dennis, 176). Charge mark: for smallwork, 1744-2750: an arm (Dennis, 193), also 1744-1750: a crowned A (Dennis, 176). Discharge Mark: for large work, 1744-1750: a running grayhound (Dennis, 176). The Maker's, Warden's, and Charge marks are on the interior rim and bottom of the base, the Maker's and Warden's marks are on the nozzle, the Discharge mark is on the rim of the base and the Charge mark for small work is on the nozzle only.
InscriptionsThe bobeche has a small swan in an oval on the rim (Tardy, p. 179).
