DescriptionOne of a set of two soap and sponge boxes. The spherical body rests on a shaped circular foot. The body and the cover are pierced with scrolling foliage androsettes with a molded rim. The hinged cover has a shaped applied thumbpiece, and two concentric rings encircling the top.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, FJ, a heart (Dennis, 194). Warden's Mark: 1780-1781: a crowned R (Dennis, 319). Charge mark: for medium sized works, 1781-1783: interlaced foliate L's (Dennis, 129). Discharge Mark: 1781-1783: a head of Alexander (Dennis, 319). Other: Two stamps of LHF; Guarantee mark used after 1838 for old small work: a boar's head (Tardy, p. 173); Countermark used after 1838: parts of insects (Rosenberg, 5929).; a small irregular circular mark on the rim, illegible. On foot edge: LHF, for Les Fils de Leon Helft (dealer)
