DescriptionOne of a pair of candlesticks. Cast with a shaped circular domed base chased with strapwork and a diaper and oval band. A crest is engraved on the base. The knop is gadrooned rising from a triangular section stem with a calyz of volutes and shells with moldings above. The knops and shoulders are of a similar shape. The stem gives way to a banded spool shaped nozzle with chased fluting(?) or foliage(?) pattern on the base of the nozzle and a badly worn pattern on the rim.
Marks Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, IBB(?) (Helft, 920,922); Maison Commune: 1737-1738: a crowned Y with an Ermine spot (Helft, 923). Other: Indecipherable mark with the warden's and maker's marks, probably the charge mark for 1732-1738 for Rennes for large work (Helft, 922,923). Indecipherable mark on exterior rim of base. Guarantee mark used after 1838 : a small boar's head (Tardy, p. 173).
