DescriptionOne of a pair of cast open trencher salts. The shaped oval body has concave sides between the molded oval base and rim with a deep, silver-gild depression for salt.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, RC, the dove of the Holy Ghost, with an E(?)PB marked over it (Dennis, 95), the EPB might be the mark of Edme-Pierre Balzac (Dennis, 30). Warden's Mark: 1742-1743: a crowned B (Dennis 146). Charge Mark: 1738-1744: a crowned A with Palm branches (Dennis, 135). Discharge Mark: for small work, 1738-1744: a fox's head (Dennis, 135). Other: Countermark used after 1838: parts of insects (Rosenberg, 5929); Guarantee Mark used after 1838 for large works; a helmeted head in an octagon with a 1 (Tardy, p. 173).
