DescriptionOne of a pair of cast open trencher salts. The shaped oval body has concave sides between the molded oval base and rim, with a deep, silver-gilt depression for salt.
Marks
Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, RC, the dove of the Holy Ghost (Dennis, 95). Warden's Mark: 1742-1743: a crowned B (Dennis, 146). Charge Mark: 1738-1744: a crowned A with palm branches (Dennis, 135). Discharge Mark: for small work, 1738-1744: a fox's head (Dennis, 135). Other: Guarantee mark used after 1838 for large works: a helmeted head in an octagon with a 1 (Tardy,p. 173); Countermark used after 1838: parts of insects (Rosenberg, 5929).
