DescriptionRaised ecuelle with a flat circular base and rounded plain sides. A flat triangular handle with an applied cut card work against a matted ground enclosing a medallion is soldered on each side. The raised stepped circular cover has an applied border of gadrooning and an applied bezel. A disc of radial reeding and a circular finial with horizontal reeding topped with an applied profile on a matted ground are applied to the center. On the front of the cover and the bowl is a coat of arm (Bonaparte family of Florence says Helft)
Marks
Maker (outer side of bowl, underside of cover (incomplete), top side of each handle): a crowned fleur de lys, two grains, A S N, a cross. Antoine de Saint Nicolas, master 1714, still living 1755. The date of registration of this mark has not been found. (Beuque p.17 #148, Dennis p.101#306a)
Warden's mark (outer side of the bowl): a crowned Q. Paris 1732, sept. 17 illegible (La datation de l'orfevrerie francaise sous l'ancien regime p.121 #374. Helft makes it legible)
charge mark (outer side the bowl, underside of cover): an A crowned on the side, difficult to read (Dennis p.102 #307e)
Discharge mark (outer rim of lid, outer side of bowl): Paris 1732-1738 for large and medium work (Tardy p.108, Dennis p.39 #51d)
Other (underside of cover, top side of each handle, outer side of bowl): guarantee mark of large work: minerva head, 1: 10 may 1838 (Tardy p.173) + unidentified mark on underside of each handle.
