DescriptionThe cup is cylindrical in form and tapers slightly at the base to form the footring. The ear-shaped handle has foliate terminals and a molded leaf at the shoulder. The saucer is in the shape of a shallow bowl. The ground of the cup is painted alternatively with shaped panels of underglaze blue (bleu lapis) and overglaze green (vert). Cailloute gilding has been applied to the areas of bleulapis, and scrolling bands of gilding separate the two ground colors. In the quatrefoil reserve on the cup a recumbent cherub supported by clouds caresses a dove. Reserved on the underglaze bleu lapis ground of the saucer, which is decorated with cailloute gilding, are three shaped panels of overglaze green enamel enclosed by scrolling bands of gilding. In the well of the saucer, a recumbent cherub with billowing drapery holding a mask is supported by clouds. A gilt dentil band encircles the rim of both the cup and saucer, and a gilt band decorates the footring of each.
Marks
Cup: interlaced Ls enclosing date letter F (abraded), painter's mark below (mostly obliterated), both in blue enamel; incised LF and OO. Saucer: interlaced Ls enclosing F, painter's mark (partly obliterated), probably for Alexander Rocher (active at Sevres 1758-64) below, both in blue enamel; incised OO.
