Fiber artist and basket maker Jan Hopkins uses an array of materials in her work including grapefruit peels, seed pods and—here—sturgeon fish skin. She began experimenting with unusual media to confront the depletion of many traditional basketry materials she was accustomed to using. Here, as in many of her works, she elevates materials that might otherwise be discarded and treats them with care and reverence. Hopkins also created a community for other fiber artists as the founder of the influential Fiber Art Network, which highlights the different ways fiber can be used in artwork
