This print was made in anticipation of the performance of Bandô Shûka I as Ohatsu, but he fell ill and died, and the role was actually taken by BandôTakesaburô I, with the opening of the play slightly delayed.

当初の予定では召仕お初役として初代坂東しうかを予定し2月28日が初日のはずであったが、坂東しうかが病没のため上演は延期され、3月10日から初代坂東竹三郎が代役を勤めて「鏡山比翼容姿視」として上演される。本図は坂東しうかが出勤する予定だった頃の予定稿。

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
