DescriptionCircular, sloping wood rim. Skin head wrapped around rattan (?) upper ring and laced with rattan to lower bamboo hoop. Twelve wood wedges between rim and lower hoop to adjust head tension. Rim, upper ring, and wood wedges painted dark red. Wedges strung together by strand of monofiliment. Short rawhide loop (for hanging?) around lower hoop. Rim roughly carved on inside.
InscriptionsIn pencil in two positions on inside of rim and head are matching marks, possibly for alignment of head and rim.
ProvenanceBy 1976, property of a museum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; between 1976 and 1981, purchased by a friend for, and later sent, to Peggy Stuart Coolidge (1913-1981), New York; 1981, by inheritance to her husband, Joseph R.
