This Delft vase is made by one of the best known makers active in the heyday of the town’s ceramic production: Jacob Wemmersz. Hoppesteyn, proprieter of The Moor's Head factory. It features detailed and exquisite painting, of two scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, the stories of "Europa and the Bull" and "Apollo and Daphne". It is of a nearly-unparalleled scale for Delft ceramics of this date. The only known piece of comparable quality and scale from this maker is in the Rijksmuseum’s collection in Amsterdam.
