DescriptionPinkish-red silk whole cloth bedcover with central medallion and geometric patterned quilting. Pinkish-red silk plain weave lining. Belonged to Increase Sumner; said to have been used by him upon taking oath of office for governor for third time, Dudley Street, Roxbury, 1799. Whole cloth quilt. There are 9-10 quilting stitches per inch.
ProvenanceSaid to have belonged to Increase Sumner (1746-1799), Governor of Massachusetts from 1797 until his death in 1799; Inherited by his great-granddaughter Miss Georgiana Welles Sargent (born 1858) of New York City; Gift of Emily Welles Robbins (Mrs. Harry Pelham Robbins) and the Hon. Sumner Welles, in memory of Georgiana Welles Sargent, to MFA 1949
