Anthony Green studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London from 1956-1959 where he met Mary Cozens-Walker whom he married in 1961. Their life together and their family history have become primary subjects for the artist who depicts intimate and ordinary events in a recognizable style. This includes the expansion of his canvases to shaped forms and a depiction of space that places the viewer in the role of observer looking down upon a tilted space which describes the artist's memory by visually embracing the entire scene in his composition. Green counts the work of Chaim Soutine and Jean Dubuffet as influential upon his earliest efforts. The Flower Arranger is a subdued canvas featuring the artist within his garden. The image of flowers is repeated first in the border of the octagonal canvas, dominating the interior garden through detailed renderings and as cut flowers in the vase near the artist's self-portrait, creating a complex reading on this traditional location and a means to highlight the artist's skills. Green's characteristic spatial relationships are evident here with the background tilted forward, encouraging the reading of the entire scene at once.
