Illustrations of machinery primarily concerned with hydraulics and the mechanisms of war; illustration of "reading machine" on p. 317 (fig. 188).First edition. The title and author's portrait on the title verso are engraved by Léonard Gaultier. Monograms on several of the illustrations (nos. 150-52) reading "JG" have led to their attribution to Jean de Gourmont II, but Mortimer rejects this.
