The long-lived Tamayo was not only an expressive painter but also an important printmaker. He was inspired by European modernism but equally by the Pre-Hispanic ceramics and sculpture which he collected. His collection was donated to the City of Oaxaca. The most important Oaxacan artist working today, Francisco Toledo, continues many of Tamayo's artistic traditions. This simple still life image (a genre for which the later Tamayo is well-known) of a filet of fish surrounded by moon-like lemon slices is transformed by the subtle layered color and delicate textures which Tamayo has evoked from the sometimes inexpressive lithographic medium.
