The play was performed at the Nakamura Theater during this month, but with a different cast. Except for Bandô Kamezô I, the actors shown here were at the Ichimura Theater.

文久2年3月には中村座で「仮名手本忠臣蔵」を上演しているが、本図とは配役が異なる。初代坂東亀蔵以外は市村座所属の役者。

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
