Inscriptions藤川水右衛門は私のしゅいをもって同家中磯貝兵太夫をやみ討になし 長光の刀をうはひ立ち退き行方をかくす 然るに兵太夫伜兵助 父の仇を討んと所々をたづぬる内眼病を煩ひ ある時水右衛門に出合しに眼病ゆえやみやみとかへりうちになる その弟終に水右衛門を尋出し本望を達す 藤川と云名の因に依てここに出す

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
