 秋の詠めにおくる年つき

奉額 菊の香やさとりし蝶は世に出づ

当寺昔は今の御堂より/辰巳の方五丁ばかり隔ちて/八人峠といふ所にあり/いつの頃か八人の賊/住たるがゆへ名とすと/いふ此盗人終/に行基の/化益にあつかりて/僧となるその後一人の/僧来りて今の場へ御堂を/移して長寿の霊験をうく/楠正成は普く観音を/信じけるなかにも当寺は/菊水寺と号せば吾家の/紋に縁あるをもて殊に信じ常に遥拝して武運を/祈しとぞさて赤坂の城に篭りしは俄のことなれバ/兵粮つきて計策にて城を落るせつ正成たゞ一人/寄手に紛れ落行とき長崎四郎左エ門の馬屋の/前を忍びて通るを敵これを見付て何者なれバ/役所の前を案内もなく通ると咎めけれバ/某は大将の御内の者といひて足ばやに/行過けれバあやしき者なり取逃すなと/追手のもの矢ごろ近く射つけたる矢/正成の臂に/あたれど痛みも/知らず其場を/辛く免れしが/後日肌身/離さぬ観音/経をひらきて/見れバ/一心称名の/二句のあひま/に矢の根立て/居たるとハ/ふしぎの/霊験

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
