初秋に風ふきむすぶ荻の堂
宿仮の世の夢ぞさめける
奉額 ふむべつの外の夜明やぬくめ鳥
禅客
当山の本尊は行基の作にて往昔纔の草庵に安置し/けるが山聳へ谷深きがゆへ鳥獣の外は春秋の彼岸にも/来る者もなかりしが爰に一人の禅客ありて六年が間/草庵に禅定して有無の工夫をいたしける処ある日/誰とも知らず一首の和哥を詠ずその歌に/はつ秋に風吹むすぶ荻の堂/宿仮の世の夢ぞ覚ける/禅客この一首を聞て忽ち多年/工夫せし無常迅速の理をさとり/その声の処を尋ね見れバ/一株の荻の下にその詠歌の/短冊あるによつて/これぞ誠に観音の/感ならんとそこに/小堂を営むがゆへ/荻の堂といへり後人種々の/霊験を蒙りたるがゆへ/今の堂舎を建立して/繁昌の地とハなれり

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
