めぐり来てねがひをかけし大棚の
誓ひもふかき谷川の水
奉額 たゞたのむたのむと風に落葉哉
大棚禅師
禅師ハ閑寂の地を好ミて近辺の鬼丸といふ岩窟に/籠りて他念なく読経しけるにふしぎと一人の老婆日夜詣りて/洞中の観音を拝み或ハ花をさゝげ菓を/供じて禅師をも拝すること屡なれバ/汝如何なるものと聞けれバ涙をながして我ハ/此里の農家某の妻なりしが嫉妬/慳貪の悪念によつて夜行/鬼となり出離の期も/しらざりしに/師が読給ふ普門品の/声に結縁して此ほと/仏果を/得た/り/是に/よつて/斯ハ日/夜参詣/せし何卒/しかじかの地に/一宇を建/給ハれ今日の/布施にこの/竹の杖を置と/いひ捨て/失ぬ/然がゆへ/禅師今の地に/観音堂をたつる/その杖今に宝/蔵にあり禅師/の名を仰ぎて/地名を大棚と/いふもふしぎ/の因縁なり

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
