数は四万部の寺のいにしへ
予三十四ケ所順礼のミきり鰐口のひゞく間に一句を考へて奉納す
千僧の経や四万部の蝉の声
幻通比丘(げんつうひく)
当寺の本尊聖観世音ハ行基の作にて霊験ことにあらたかに／ましませり寛弘四年三月十三日書写山にて性空上人弟子／幻通に告ていはく武蔵国秩父に行基開基の／観音あれども東夷の応機はつせず／怠転におよびしことを薩タ霊鳥を／使ハしめて吾に示せり然るによつて吾／四万部の妙典を誦するといへども／今寂に臨めバ趣くこと能ハず汝予／遺命をたがへず秩父に趣きて／諸人を化度し霊跡の再発を勤め／よとあれバ其後幻通当所に／来りて四万部の供養／塚を建諸人を／勧化しけれバ仏恩を／蒙る者あまたなれバ／今に参詣の者／絶ず寺号ハ供養塚を／かたどりて四万部寺／といへり

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
