Sculptor Alexander Calder, known especially for his famous mobiles and whimsical wire sculptures, showed jewelry at several important exhibitions in the 1940s and inspired many later studio jewelers. Many of his works include movable elements related to his famous mobiles. Calder made this dramatic necklace in 1941 for his sister, Margaret Calder Hayes, on the occasion of her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.
