Alfred Stieglitz made his earliest photographs of Lake George in the late 1910s. Stieglitz focused his camera on elements of his family's summer home, a white-shingled farmhouse on the shores of the lake, several hours north of New York City. In this image from the 1930s, he was clearly drawn to the Victorian details of the house's porch and windows, simplifying their forms into abstract cutouts that echo the heart-shaped foliage of the grapevine on the railing. For Stieglitz, Lake George was both a retreat from the noise and bustle of the city and the site of some of his most influential nature studies of poplar trees, lilac bushes, grasses, and clouds.
