DescriptionThe story of the play Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi. Thanks to the prayers of his wife Hatsuhana in the Shirataki waterfall in the mountains of Hakone (right sheet), Katsugorô (left sheet, in background) is miraculously healed of his disability and, with the help of his brother-in-law Fudesuke (center) is able to kill the villains responsible for the death of his older brother.

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
