DescriptionThe inscriptions identify young Danjûrô VIII, in the center sheet, as both "Ichikawa Shinnosuke" (his original stage name, which he had stopped using in 1825, and "Eighth generation (hachidaime)," referring to his assumption of the name Ichikawa Danjûrô VIII in 1832.3, when he was only nine years old. This suggests a date of around 1832.3 for the print; however, Ichikawa Kuzô II (in the right sheet) did not take this name until 1835.11. Nakamura Utaemon IV took the name in 1836.1, but he was in Osaka at the time. He had previously played in Edo, from 1827 to 1833, under his earlier name of Nakamura Shikan II.
