春の部。島津藩の下屋敷にあった千代が池は、南北朝時代に新田義興(にったよしおき)の戦死を知った恋人千代が入水したとされる。池の東北岸には千代が衣服を掛けたという衣掛松(きぬかけまつ)があり、明治の小説家田山花袋(たやま かたい)はその下で読書をしたという。 -- 藤澤紫K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
