万延1(1860)年8月、大坂、筑後芝居「東海道四谷怪談(とうかいどうよつやかいだん)」で、中村翫雀は民谷伊右衛門(たみやいえもん)を演じている。歌舞伎では神谷、民谷を両用する。この芝居に取材した見立の役者絵で、四幕目の「夢の場」。「七ツいろは」と題されるシリーズの1図で、国員、猿雀、芳瀧の合作のシリーズ。 -- 武藤 純子K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
